Using Art to Make a Difference: Jonathan Gerow

Blessed with creative skills and a vision, the young man from New York has a very special story to tell. And a crucial place in the stories of many others.

It would be fair to describe Jonathan Gerow as a highly artistic person, and as we know, art serves its consumers in higher ways. He has worked for many different companies and has had several different roles, but they all make good use of his artistic skills. These are skills which he has been able to fine-tune from an early age when as a teenager he picked up his first music instrument, and later got into art. By the time Jonathan was in his early twenties, he had become a well-renown tattoo artist. But his career was to take a slightly different turn.

He received the devastating news that his mother was diagnosed with cancer. Whilst continuing to work hard on his career, he spent every free moment with his mum while she had her treatment which included a tough regime of chemotherapy. An extremely challenging time, at which Gerow also learned what would lead him to the next stage of his career.

Scalp Micropigmentation is a widely used hair loss treatment where natural pigments are applied within the dermal layer of the scalp, serving to replicate a natural shaved head style, and is a popular choice for those faced with hair loss. Jonathan was very interested in the potential: “I looked at what others were doing in those days and thought the final result could be a whole lot more realistic. The chemo patients that I had seen were losing their hair and some of them were devastated. This had a massive impact on me. After my Mom passed I dreamt about how I could help them and my Mom. I think it was my way grieving for my Mom and following my passion

He moved to Florida where he offered his practised skills to several companies, as well as setting up a company with a couple of partners. But soon after this, he established www.gerowhairink.com in New York City, operating a clinic that is now the busiest in the world, containing over 5 full-time technicians. Jonathan strives to make sure people feel that they are offered a personal touch to their service at Gerow Hair Ink.

As for how things are looking for Jonathan and indeed the SMP industry, we can turn to the man himself: “I believe that sometime in the not too distant future the Scalp Micropigmentation industry will be regulated. As the customers become more educated over time they will know and recognise what a final result looks and feels like. I want to play a role in helping as many folks as possible reap the benefits of this art form on our bodies. Whether it’s a patient with alopecia, pattern baldness or a chemotherapy patient who has lost his or her hair I want to help them. I want to make my children and my mom proud!”

At this point, we are sure he has already done so, and will continue to do so.
